Uniqlo Adaptive Alteration

Project Background
The project is an exploration into the pressing issue faced by people with physical disabilities – the lack of accessible and affordable clothing that caters to their unique needs.

For individuals with physical disabilities, clothing is more than a mere fashion statement; it is an essential part of daily life, significantly impacting their comfort, mobility, and self-esteem. The existing gap in the market for inclusive and affordable clothing options has long been a source of frustration.
Research and Insights
Starting off this project, I did primary and secondary research on my target audiences and what are the problems that they face in their daily lives. I read up new articles, online surveys and personal experiences from people with physical disabilities. After having a brief idea of what are some problems they face regarding fashion, I decided to personally do some interviews and surveys with people who have physical disabilities.
The research phase also unveils a pressing issue: the soaring costs of adaptive clothing in the current market. This financial barrier poses a formidable challenge for individuals with limited income, impeding their access to the comfort and functionality that adaptive fashion promises.
I also researched on examples of adaptive fashion and their different functions:
- People who need to wear leg brace, wear pants with velcro/magnets
- Cut or adjusted sleeve /pants leg for leg amputation so not dangling and looking weird
- Sensory-friendly (softer seams, no tags)
- Buttons change to magnetic buttons
EXPERIMENTATION AND IDEATION
- Space Design: A designated space in the retail store for users to be aware of the campaign and be able to have an in-store shopping experience

- Phygital tool: Help users to shop without the trouble of undressing and dressing, using AR to show on the screen how the products will look on them

- Types of alterations: Different alterations that are available for users to choose like zippers, magnetic buttons and velcro
Branding
I chose purple as it is a colour used to celebrate/identify people with disabilities. It also means inclusivity.

Physical Mockup
Here, I moved from conceptualization to the physicality, bringing Uniqlo’s clothing and transforming them into adaptive fashion through mockups.
